Comparing wind systems against the “competition,” calculating the return on investment, or comparing strategies based on net present value are all ways to judge the economic feasibility of a wind energy system. As noted, economics is not the only measure on which we base our decisions. Energy independence, environmental values, reliability, the “cool” and “fun” factors, and the value of a hobby for renewable energy gear heads, among other factors, also figure prominently in our decisions to invest in wind. They are all perfectly valid motivations and should not be forgotten.
Economics may be irrelevant if you are committed to creating a sustainable future, helping reverse costly global climate change, creating a better world for future generations, setting a good example, or supporting the fledgling wind energy industry. All are perfectly acceptable reasons for installing a system.
