Top Green Business Ideas for the Eco Business Entrepreneur

In the current climate of global warming, chemical toxins, rainforest destruction etc, there is a huge need for green-minded inventive entrepreneurs with environmentally friendly business ideas. Add on to this the poor job market at the moment and the consequent large numbers of families who are looking to start up a business, and the topic "green business ideas" is a particularly hot topic. Here is a summary of what I consider to be some of the best eco business ideas out there:Green business idea 1: Solar panels and wind turbinesMany homeowners are currently put off from purchasing wind or solar power systems to power their home, as the cost and aesthetic is a big obstacle. However, month by month this technology is getting cheaper and of a higher standard. China has got in the game and is now producing top rate solar panels for nearly half the price of Western manufacturers. There are numerous opportunities in this field for affiliate sellers and professional installation businesses. If you live in the right part of the country, it is well worth looking into.Environmentally friendly business idea 2: Green product e-commerceEco-friendly cleaning products are becoming more popular by the day, as an increasing number of people are finding out that traditional cleaning products are very harmful to the environment. Eco-friendly products are a niche market, and this market is expanding rapidly. It takes a lot of work to set it up, but if you can source some great products, and start up an e-commerce site, the potential is huge. Remember though, creating the site is just the beginning of the work, marketing it is what takes the most amount of time, effort and resources.Eco business idea 3: Eco-Friendly house cleaning serviceGreen products are on the agenda again, but this time in relation to the service industry. You don't need to be a cleaner yourself to set up an eco-friendly cleaning business. You just need to supply a trusted cleaner with an array of effective green products and get your marketing brain going. If you live in a big city the potential is enormous.Green business idea 4: Green consultantHelp people save money on their energy bills, help reduce energy consumption, and enjoy setting up a rewarding and potentially lucrative green consultancy business. Green consultants go to homes and evaluate the most important things that the household needs to do to reduce energy bills. This can mean looking at the building itself for energy consumption weaknesses, or just looking at the habits of the residents, and offering your knowledgeable advice. These are just a few of the many great ideas out there. Let them inspire you to doing something great!

Green Business Ideas - How Can I Benefit Financially While Helping the Environment?

Green business ideas are becoming increasingly important, and profitable, as people around the world realize that we need to change our behavior and become more accountable for the way that we treat the planet.Environmental problems, such as the greenhouse effect and global warming, have already damaged the world to such a level that grave concerns exist about the future. In response, new green careers are emerging to assist with changing the behavior of the community and implement more environmentally friendly policies.Green business trendsGovernments around the world have indicated their support for the creation of new green jobs and green business opportunities into the future.Green business ideas in the United States are a natural marriage with the economic stimulus package there. This is expected to create around 3.5 million jobs in the next few years in an attempt to double the current supply of renewable energy in the country. The stimulus package is dedicating $500 million to training in new green jobs, making this a key industry for the near future.Of course, other countries are also aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with international agreements, such as the Kyoto Protocol. The pressure to act is building and Governments can no longer afford to stand back and do nothing. Many lucrative green business ideas are brewing as a result of this increased attention and support.Profitable green career pathsThere are many different types of green businesses that are currently doing very well.Organic farming is becoming more and more popular as consumers are now much more aware of the dangers (to health and the environment) of using chemicals in farming. The electric car market is progressing nicely too with more auto manufacturers responding to an increasing demand for this type of product. The depletion of the world's supplies of fossil fuels is generating many new green business ideas as companies and individuals look for new solutions to meet the community's energy needs. The options for working in green business are practically limitless. The main required ingredient is a change of thinking. If you are already working in a particular industry then you will need to think about how your current practices can be improved to be more environmentally friendly and sustainable into the future.Research has indicated that consumers are taking environmental policies and practices into account when choosing the businesses that they deal with. So businesses can no longer afford to ignore the eco-friendly approach. If you are looking for a new career, then put your feelers out for green business ideas. Whether you are interested in working in education, politics, research, construction, health, farming or a range of other fields, there is a green business opportunity waiting for you somewhere.

Make Money Off a Green Business

How to make money off going green- DIY Recycled Enzyme now!Today's business is all about being green. From Wal-Mart to Apple, everyone is talking about how green their approach, packaging, or methods are. And they are making huge money out of it! Well, for small people like you and I can have a hard time participate in a big going for green business and try to capture some share from the top, but wait! There's always a good way to "be green" and start up a "green & easy" business and earn "green" buck (dollars)! Recycled enzyme, some may called it garbage enzyme is one of those easy ways to make small company to participate the green business and earn big green buck! So, what is recycled enzyme?Recycled enzyme is a multipurpose liquid or fluid that can be used as a cleansing agent, purifier, fertilizer, blockage solution and many more. In fact, it helps you to save lots of money and make lots from it! Let me explain to you slowly; think of your kitchen waste, how are you going to deal with it? Throw it away may seem to the logical way. In this case, NO!It is actually a smart way of using your kitchen wastes instead of throwing them out. Making recycled enzymes using kitchen wastes such as vegetables and fruits can actually save the environment. Because DIY recycled enzyme will go through a process of fermentation and this fermentation process will release ozone gas that will help to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Simply to say, it is an excellent way to do our part in safeguarding the environment but at the same time, making money out of it by selling it to the community.Believe me, many will be happily to pay for your "leftover" treasure, recycled enzyme. The basic ingredients to DIY recycled enzymes are as the following:-* 1 part of Sugar
* 3 parts of Vegetable and/or fruit dregs
* 10 parts of water
* A plastic/ glass container (use which is air-tight)Remark: Citrus fruits like oranges and pineapples or even apple will provide nice smelling during the fermentation process.Step to step to make recycled enzymes:Step 1: In the plastic container, dilute the sugar in water; then, add in the fruit/vegetable dregsBe sure to leave about one third of empty space in the plastic container for the fermentation processStep 2: Close the container tightly; during the first month, open the container's cap twice a day to release the gas that has built upStep 3: Once in a while where necessary, push the floating dregs downward. Be sure to place the container in a cool and ventilated area.Step 4: After the first month, the ingredients in the container should be stable and you won't need to release the gas anymore. At this stage, you just need to leave it alone to ferment for another 2 months before using it. Isn't that easy?Last step: Before using the "finished" recycled enzyme, you may filter it, take only the liquid.
If you can buy nice bottles then use it, but our suggestion is to use something like 500ml mineral water bottles to store the liquids (or what we called recycled enzymes). If you can make good labeling, then do it and paste it on the bottle. At this stage, recycled enzymes will be ready to be sold to the community with the cost that you decide!Enzyme cleaner has many uses for the environment, agriculture and even in homes. In homes, it is used:
- as a household cleaning liquid- to remove foul odours, molds and grime in the kitchen and toilet
- as an anti-bacterial and anti-viral agent
- to drive away insects
- to clean carpets and remove ticks
- for laundry washing and ironing
- for mopping floors
- for cleaning cars

Starting A Green Business

The key to starting a 'green' business is ensuring that the business idea, like any business idea, has legs. If you are going to go out into the market place to peddle your wares and services as green, you better know, in your heart of hearts, how exactly your product IS green.Tip #1:How is your product and service different from the conventional non-green alternatives? In this category I would consider what is the substance of your product and service? For products this would mean, what is it made from and how is that better than what we were using before? You should know enough about the products 'inputs' as possible. Inputs are the things that your product is made from. Is it made from a non-renewable resource? Is it made from a renewable resource? Is it 100% biobased or just a little biobased? Is it made from more than 50%, and ideally 100% recycled materials? Where are those recycled materials from? What would they be used for if they were not being used to make your product? How is that better?Basically if a Birkenstock wearing environmentalist was going to challenge you on the greenness of your product you should be able to comfortably discuss it with him/her. You should not be aiming to be 'green' for the guy that recently discovered polystyrene cups are not good or who saw an old Oprah show on light bulbs. If your 'green' business is going to be sustainable and last, it needs to be something that is slightly fringe and will make it into the mainstream and stay. It cannot be a flash in the pan 'green' idea. Someone with a 'greener' alternative will replace you in no-time.Tip #2What solution does your product or service offer to improve our impact on the planet?I would generally categorize this as the 'output' side of your greenness. Where is your product going to end up when people are done with it? Your product or service should have a clear, purposeful, realistic and measurable impact that is sustainable in the future. This vision should appeal, eventually, to a significant chunk of society with proper gorilla marketing.Examples:Many businesses are either starting to sell or make 'biodegradable' products. Four-six years ago this was a new word that generally meant ' made from something natural and disintegrates naturally'.As more and more manufacturers come on board to the emerging 'green' industry, there will be a need for market differentiation. If everyone is green then potentially nothing is really green. So how will you differentiate your greeness? If products cannot quantify how their product is clearly green; what they mean by the terms they use; and how it improves our impact on the planet, the market will either look for 'green' products that do or will be turned off the 'green' marketing schemes and go back to the same old same old.

The Green Business Myth Busted

Going Green seems a little like the infamous "bridge to nowhere."  It starts with a well-intended commitment to the environmental cause, but then gets lost a meandering path of special interests, misguided promoters, and immense diversity of subject matter.  Ask yourself three questions that will reveal everyone's confusion on the subject. 1) What is the meaning of "Green"?2) What is the methodology, path, or process to "Go Green"?3) When do you reach a recognized level of "Green" certification"?These are not difficult questions, but belies the problems incurred by businesses that have already agreed to the need for Green operation.  The fevered rush to become an environmentally-friendly business suddenly runs into a morass of confused information and partisan advocates that leads to limp results.  Green (in its most precise definition) refers to the "health impact on living things by the actions we practice in our spheres of influence."  While Green has been expanded include all things environmental, it should not be a replacement for the environmental topic.  Green properly defined is about health and living things.  Yes, I know that the earth is called a living thing too, but it is in a whole different class of applications. If Going Green starts with the health impact, we have a starting point.  That starting point can effectively be a platform to launching into other related subject like sustainability (resource management), pollution (waste) and conservation (preserving nature).  These I feel are the four major components of environmentalism, but conservation is not the single issue of our time.  The same could be said of health, sustainability, or pollution issues.  They come together to complete the full environmental puzzle. For a business, Going Green starts with the health issues currently at work in their facility.  The health of workers is both the logical and rational starting point for any business.  Issues of sustainability follow the health in the process.  Therefore, the Green Business League has a month-by-month list of suggestions that can move any business toward an environmentally-friendly business.  So, we have a starting point and a path for the Green business to eliminate a large part of the confusion. Some of the well-intended mistakes are the belief that installing a solar panel system, buying carbon credits, or planting green plants on the roof will make a business Green.  These are pieces of the puzzle, but they are not the singular or complete solution.   There are those businesses that  attend environmental seminars, make charitable contributions to environmental causes, or install CFL bulbs thinking that they are a Green business.  However, making the attempt to Go Green is not the same as a Green business. If Going Green is about construction of a new business or the renovation of an existing business, what about the vast majority of businesses that rent or lease?  They should not be exempted from the Green program because they do not control the facilities, landscaping, HVAC, or greenery on the roof.  Green business is predominantly about the operation of the business and only partially about the construction of the building.  You see, it is possible to have a relatively non-Green business operation in what might be a certifiably Green Business.  Green is more a practice than it is a dual-flush commode. Why not allocate points for each additional Green practice incorporated the daily operation until a certain level is reached?  While allowing for a variety of applications that have point assignments, there should be a number value that indicates a level of Green Business success.  For the Green Business League, that initial level for Green Business certification is 100.  Since these points are from literal practices put in place, there are no token or isolated efforts that make instant Green businesses.  Going Green is a process, and continuous process at that.  Knowing where Green starts, the process to go Green, and when Green is certifiable is a tremendous way to be "Honestly Green."

Marketing Your Green Business

A Green Business is something to be proud of. By establishing such a business you are contributing to the well being of the Planet and of your fellow man. It doesn't matter if you are a consulting firm that advises others on the best ways to Go Green or if you sell merchandise that is "green", by adding your voice and your resources to the Eco friendly movement then you are doing the world a great service. As the Green Movement gains momentum and more companies are joining the fold it is important to make certain that your business does not become another tree among the ever growing forest. You have to market your business in such a way that it is noticeable and necessary while maintaining the right to be Green. It's not easy being Green especially if you are a small business just starting out in the Eco friendly business market. Consumers that are environmentally concerned are also environmentally savvy and know what to look for when shopping for goods and services that boast about being good for the environment.Greenwashing is a negative term that you never want attached to your business. It means that a company claiming to be eco friendly and green is exaggerating and in truth, their practices of going green just do not hold up under closer inspection. Your business can avoid being accused of Greenwashing by practicing what you preach. If you deal in energy saving light bulbs, use them in the office, the break room, where ever you can. If you trust the product enough to sell it then use it. If you're company advises others on ways to Go Green then follow your own advice. Recycle, reuse, install solar panels, water saving products, and whatever else you tell your clients to do.Remember, no matter how well you advertise your business and market your products, if consumers have no faith in it then you will simply not make a profit and your business will become untrustworthy and a laughing stock. When it comes to marketing your business and goods look for ways to reduce waste associated with traditional advertising techniques, including the newspaper and other print publications. More newspaper companies are using recycled materials, so if you plan on using the print media make sure your ad appears in a paper that is proud of being recycled. A popular alternative is using online services as a way to market and advertise your business. There are several methods and ways to do this, from creating an entire website devoted to your business, to using ads such as pop up ads or text based ads that appear on websites. A new addition to the online advertising game is sites devoted to marketing Green businesses. These sites allow consumers a place to go to and search databases based on location and products that are eco friendly. The key to marketing your business and your green products is letting consumers know that it exists. Advertising such a business can be tricky as you will certainly not want to waste resources which may be mistaken as Greenwashing. Get your name out there by word of mouth, through online ads, and with any other innovative and clever method you can think of.Other ways to market your Green Business can include: offering free recycling at the business location, or offering free seminars on how to go green. Become a positive voice in the community and encourage others, including the city to go green.Marketing your green business will require extra effort but the rewards are well worth it not just for your profits but for the Earth as well.

Nightmares of a Green Business

When the public thinks of a Green business, the implied message is that the company is probably a very happy and healthy place to work. The workplace should not be a scary place where some discoveries would send chills down the spine and a shock to our senses. Yet, the truth is that many Green businesses are a threat to the workers who spend a good part of their life in less-than-safe environments. The most stunning Green business nightmare is an accidental visit to the janitor's closet. Although the operation is a relatively clean building with a nightly crew of seldom seen people who quietly clean every room of your facility, things may not be what you think. Far more sinister discoveries lurk behind the doors that will tell us more than most of us really want to know. But, there is that curiosity that drives the suspicious few to find out what really lies beyond the obvious. We would all assume that the place that holds all the cleaning products must be the safest place of all, right?Opening the door to this rarely visited place reveals a less-than-safe place. If you are bold enough to enter, those with environmental sensitivities quickly feel a hauntingly odd feeling that this is a place that the day-people are not supposed to see. You will see the things you will expect to see. Brooms, mops, and buckets rest in the corner in less than good condition. A set of shelves is affixed to a wall crammed full of a wide array of bottles. Some products are used to clean the toilet bowl. These bowl cleaners are found to contain acids that certainly aren't good for people. There is the ubiquitous white bottle of bleach that most people know as a dangerous chemical. The bleach bottle is sitting next to the ammonia bottle that is mixed with water to clean windows. You really do not want to know what will happen when you mix ammonia and bleach in a common container. The fumes that are produced that will devastate your lungs and could kill a person in short order. If one looks further, they will often find large containers of floor stripper sitting on the floor. Floor stripper is so caustic that it will blister your skin or cause blindness if not quickly washed with water. Sitting next to the stripper is the floor finish that is a combination of zinc and acrylic compounds. Floor finish is not as caustic as the floor stripper, but it also emits something called volatile organic compounds that the EPA cautions the public can have acute and chronic consequences with continued exposure. At this point, the concerned visitor will be tempted to hold his breath because he suddenly realizes that he is breathing a massive combination of potentially hazardous airborne poisons. Also in this room is an odd looking machine call a buffer. This is used to buff the stripped and newly-finished hard floors to a glossy shine. If you were around when the stripper product was applied at night, you would feel a choking impulse in your throat, and your eyes would smart and ache. When the floor finish is put down, these fumes seem less intense; but every product that dries emits a different kind of volatile organic compounds, so don't be fooled by the milder smell. When the workers turn on the buffer, you might notice that they wear masks because the buffer throws billion of small particles into the air that contain zinc and other compounds. Of course, since this is done at night, all the workers will detect in the morning are the shiny floors and a residual chemical smell.Looking further on the shelves are aerosol sprays that can't be good for the atmosphere. Some contain ozone depleting chemicals. Others have compressed gases that are released into the air circulation system of the building. You will also find spray bottles with cleaning solutions in them. Of course, the required Material Safety Data Sheets that the law requires to be posted in these areas are most often missing. Some cleaning products foam and fizzle, which means that there is a chemical reaction causing a gas release of some kind. There are cans of Comet-like scouring powers, old rags and mops, and other bottles than have an unknown purpose. One thing you will recognize is the vacuum cleaner. You are somewhat reassured that this is evidence of the competency of the service, until you dare to feel the bag to find that it probably hasn't been emptied for more than week or so. The old festering dirt is routinely stirred up each evening when these vacuums are turned on. Making things worse, these are not even the well-known HEPA vacuums that will remove more of the dirt from the air. These are the cheaper models that blow microscopic particles though each and every room that is vacuumed. Perhaps, it would have been wise to use a Green certified janitorial service after all.Another rare discovery is made when one happens to be in the office after hours. Buildings are often lonely places when the day crew has gone. This time the nightly visitation is not from a group of workers who speak an odd language, but from a crew of workers clad in Ghostbuster-type outfits carrying tanks and hoses. These are the pest killers who arrive every month or so to spray about chemicals to destroy pest and vermin. You may be mildly assured that "This stuff is safe for humans," but it will kill everything else! Few people ever know what products are being sprayed about, but these ingredients add yet another layer of potentially dangerous chemicals into the air that recycle throughout the building day after day.During your daring visit of the most unlikely places in the building, you might hazard a visit to the basement or some storage area. Here you will find all the things that the business once thought were necessary, but now reside in the limbo area of the building waiting to be eventually sent out to the trash. As you enter, your nose detects the familiar but pungently unlikable smell of mold and mildew. This happens all the time in dark and dank places. Cardboard boxes, old paper, and moisture from condensation or a slow leak are the perfect environment for mold. Mold produces yet another danger to your health known as microbial volatile organic compounds. The air exchange moves circulated air through this area as well as the rest of the building.Perhaps, you will recall the new paint in various areas, the new carpeting, or even the new furniture brought into your building over the last year. Each of these additional improvements actually brought even more fumes, smells, and outgassing opportunities that also befoul the air. Most would have thought that these improvements were positive additions to the office, but they added even more to the increasingly toxic cloud of air that workers breathe every day. Fragrances that have a chemical composition should also be consider air pollution.Workers bring in even more problems by sneezing germs into the air, introducing bacteria to the facility, and preparing food with attendant smells. The greatest shock of all is that this company is promoted as a Green business. Well, they did change some of the lights over to CFLs and made a corporate decision to buy recycled paper for all copiers. Oh yes, they even bought a Green logo off the Internet. But, the facts are clear that this is a nightmare as a Green business. The indoor air quality impacts the health of each and every worker. They breathe this accumulation of toxic substances 365 days a year for what could be a twenty year employment term. The reality is that a truly Green company must address the indoor air quality as a fundamental of all other environmental improvements. Recycling, energy savings, and source reduction are the other parts of a Green or sustainable business. Unless a company addresses the Green certification in a proper way, the results are going to be a nightmare rather than a dream. To do the job right, contact the Green Business League for serious guidance and certification. A Certified Green Consultant is the proven solution to a healthy and an environmentally friendly business. Everything else is an illusion of Green and a may have scary consequences.

Green Business and Green Profits

Businesses have seen the profit in going green. It has revived some businesses that looked dead. The best profit though goes to the environment that benefits most when businesses become more responsible towards it. A stable and healthy planet is crucial for the thriving of any business.Going green has started paying back to those who walked the talk. Major industry players are reaping the benefits of going green. In a report by CNN on December 21, 2006, the spokesperson of General Electric said after it has gone green 'it's both great business and a good business - great in that it is generating real orders....'. The real meaning of those words is in the numbers. On the same report, it said after General Electric invested $1.5 billion in going green, that area alone has generated over $10 billion as at end of 2005 and on track to pass $20 billion by the end of 2010.Other companies like Interface Inc reported that their company cost has gone down since it started implementing its green strategies. They plan to go 100% green by 2020. Wal-mart has also benefited from going green. Its goal now is to solely use renewable energy for its fleet of stores.Usatoday.com reported that companies like Patagonia, Ikea, Sunpower, Sierra Nevada Brewing, Nike, Hewlett Packard, Yahoo and UPS were using green practices in their work sites, product development and packaging. This has really paid off for the companies and they now realize that it pays to go green.Another report by the Canadian Entrepreneur stated that "...small and medium-sized companies can boost profits by at least Sixty Five percent. That is what Green Profit is all about: doing the right thing and getting huge profits. Sixty Five percent increases in profit should cause every company to want to be part of this project. Employees, the drivers behind every company also insist on responsibility. In the same report in the Canadian Entrepreneur, seventy five percent of respondents said "...a company's social and environmental reputation is more important than the salary".Another reason why your business should go green is reputation. Businesses that ignore environmental responsibilities are not highly regarded by today's high discerning consumers. Consumers are increasingly aligning themselves with companies that are green conscious and take their environmental responsibilities serious. In a survey conducted by University of Waikato Management School to show the relationship between going green and performance and published on the site of Britannica, it was found that going green was responsible for six percent increase of both market performance and development performance. Going green had direct effect on the over fifty companies that took part in the survey.Deciding to go green should be your business's goal. Going green excites your customers and makes them respect you more, as a lot of the population is becoming more involved with cleaning up the Earth. Don't take it for granted. It is starting out and the best time to join the train is now. Go green and stay green!

Green Business - Three Red Hot Business Strategies

It's a not-so-well-kept secret: green is red hot.The revolution that began back in the 1960s has finally begun to fire the imagination of mainstream culture worldwide. Many of the starry-eyed dreamers of forty years ago are finally starting to see the changes they envisioned so long ago. If you're a business owner who is looking to add more green and sustainable practices to your own business practices, here are three key strategies.Dream Big DreamsIt never hurts to dream big. Once you begin to tune into the green trend taking place in the world, you'll be able to envision how your entrepreneurial venture can work within current business practices to not only help save the planet, but also make significant amounts of money from clients who appreciate your efforts. The world is undergoing a permanent change, and there can be no looking back. In order to keep from being left behind, you have no choice but to incorporate more green practices into your business anyway, so why not take an active role and seek out opportunities as you see them? This is a time in human history when it will pay to be in the forefront of bringing about change. Position your business to take advantage of those changes.Make Incremental ChangesJust because green is the hottest thing around doesn't mean taking foolish risks, however. If you immerse yourself in following and understanding the innovative changes taking place in your industry, you'll be much more likely to make intelligent decisions as to which green practices make the most sense for your company at any given time.As always, there will be some risk, but when has there ever been a time when being in business presented no risk? Stay in touch with new technology, but employ innovations wisely according to how they fit into your overall plan for growth and sustainability. Remember that every wave of change is soon followed by another wave that was prompted by the previous one.Crunch the NumbersFinally, though it may be hard to do as you get more involved in the excitement of green technology, you must never lose sight of the fact that you're in business to make a profit. Be innovative, but always keep a close eye on the bottom line to make sure your incorporation of green business practices adds to your overall profits. That's the key to green success: balancing the benefits with the pay-offs.

What is Green Business?

Many new and old businesses are choosing to go green. Philosophies are changing and many business owners and entrepreneurs are putting the environment at the forefront of their operations. It will be helpful to better understand what this type of business is, how to find ideas, and five current business opportunities that exist.Defining Green BusinessA green business is one that does not have a negative impact on the environment. There are certain principles that help to define whether or not a business is green. These include adding sustainability principles to each business decision, replacing non-green services or products with environmentally friendly services or products, is greener than the competition, and has committed to long term success following environmental principles. There are some essential characteristics for sustainable business. One of the most important essentials that can be found in all green businesses is the triple top line production value. This means that a business is pursuing three main goals simultaneously. These include financially benefiting the company, bettering the world naturally, and providing social advantages to employees as well as members of the community.Finding Green Business IdeasThere are several different ways to find business ideas that are green. There are magazines that provide information and resources specifically about green business. This is an excellent way to learn about building sustainable companies as well as keep up on trends. It is also possible to visit a green business blog or attend a green business conference in order to become fully immersed within this industry. This will be one of the fastest ways to find out current trends and ideas that are becoming popular. The difficult part about looking for opportunities this way is that there are not a lot of conferences that occur and there are not a lot of blogs that offer great information. The websites that are available do provide a tremendous level of excellent information for entrepreneurs to read.5 Green Business Opportunities for EntrepreneursThese generally can be broken down into three different categories, which include recycling, reducing, and reusing. Following these three guidelines can be helpful to for someone that is looking for green business opportunities.Below are 5 green business opportunities that have great potential, especially during recessionary times.1) Open up a barter business:A barter system allows businesses and consumers the opportunity to trade goods without the exchange of currency. Products and services can be exchanged for other products or services without money changing hands. Money can be made from a barter exchange by charging a small fee for each transaction that takes place.2)Rainwater Harvesting and Catchment Systems:This idea involves capturing fresh rain water using containment systems. With the world's fresh water supply declining, there has become an increased demand for inexpensive rain water harvesting systems. Green entrepreneurs can help to distribute these water harvesting systems to people in third world countries.3) Recycled products:Manufacturing new items out of recycled products is another growing trend in green business. Entrepreneurs are taking others peoples junk and are using it to make new items that can be sold on the marketplace.4) Luxury leasing:Luxury leasing is an excellent idea to generate revenue by renting out high end merchandise. Consumers are interested in luxury items, but don't have the same desire to buy these items. By renting out luxury shoes, hand bags, & accessories, you generate repeat revenue off a single purchase of a luxury item, which gives you a terrific return on investment.5) Microfinance & Social Capital Investing:Microfinance can be defined as a way for people with low income to be able to secure micro loans when they do not have access to other financing sources. It works by allowing poor people to borrow money from peer to peer or similar lending institutions. Money can be made from this business idea from fees collected as well as interest charged.Green business ideas can be a great way to make money and do something great for the environment at the same time. For those that are interested, there are even green home business opportunities that exist that allow people to start a small business from the comfort of their own home.

Green business is not only a profitable practice, but also it pays attention to the many needed environmental awareness issues of today. While a lot of businesses are adapting this principle, there are still a few others who are having trouble on getting started in terms of going green. The first thing you have to do is to devise a well thought and well researched plan. It is important to put the plan in writing so it will serve as a guideline for you and your business.Know your target market. Once you know what target market you want to service, you will then find it easier to narrow down the list of products or services you can offer. Note that you should only offer services or products that interest you as well so you can better market it to others.Do a lot of research? Now the ways and means you can get your product green, from manufacturing to distribution. Document this and submit it to organizations who certify green businesses. You have to get some form of "eco label" into your product so that your customers will know that your business is an environment friendly. You can also tie up or go in partnership with government agencies and programs that also aims to reduce waste in the environment.Going green does not only involve your product, it involves the entire workplace. You should also take the effort to create an energy efficient workplace for your employees. In order to be believable in your green approach, you have to practice what you preach. Use recycled materials in the office. There is also energy efficient air conditioning systems and appliances you can install. Make your employees know the importance of saving energy and have them practice it by turning off lights and other appliances when not in use. Segregate your trash and recycle those that can be recycled like plastic bottles, cardboard boxes and papers. What you cannot reuse, you can sell like used bottles and ink containers. If your employees only live nearby, encourage them to use bikes or go for carpooling.Lastly, let everyone know that you are running a green business by creating a green marketing strategy. A lot of people are now aware regarding energy conservation and environmental protection so for sure a lot of customers will come your way.

Tips on Branding a Green Business

Do you recall "Cutters"?  These were the people who seemed to have no regard for anyone else except getting there before you.  It seemed that life has always been all about their interests, not yours.  It is an insult to everyone who did things right by those who just didn't give a damn about the effect on you.Cutting has found its way into the Green business arena as businesses find ways to cut in line ahead of the ones who are doing it right. The right way to develop as a Green business is to develop a sustainability plan that does more than a few token gestures, and then faithfully implement that plan over time. To validate that the efforts were real and properly engaged, an auditor is called in to verify that the company had achieved a level of certification. These four steps of planning, implementation, audit, and certification are the normal and right way to develop a truly Green business.Any attempt to brand your company as a Green business must be supported by something more than boast and should have substance that supports the company's marketing and branding campaign. Well, there are those who just can't wait that long.  Instead, they follow one of several ways to cut into line as others faithfully follow the rules.  For those wondering, "Cutting" is just another definition for the Greenwashing mania happening across America.   Of course, the most flagrant form of cutting is simply self-assertion.  Small companies do it by inventing their own logo on Photoshop or making Green claims in their advertising that are not fair representations.  Larger companies have the budget for more polished Greenwashing efforts. If you Google for "Green business certification" on the Internet, you will find that 98% of the companies offering to certify your business "Sight unseen."  These website represent to worst form of Green certification because they rely on deceptive practices from the start.  An audit is not a self-assessment.  Yet, these firms claim to filling in forms about your company are an audit.  Worse yet, they ask the company to pass the deception on to the customer by claiming that they are "Green certified."   The only real requirement for these scam certifications is paying the fee.In a less critical application, many cities have borrowed the idea of forming a Green business certification that comes in an ad hoc committee to promote their Green project.  It reminds me of Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland years where they put on a Hollywood show in a barn.  You can admire the initiative, but there is not much credibility in such project.  Participants have to be concerned that a lack of future funding or a demise of volunteers will bring this boastful program down to a humiliating end.Greenwashing is endemic in the business world, and the variation run from blatant abuse to well-intended ignorance.  This brings us to the element that should be found in a true certification program.  First of all, there needs to be a national standard that creates a uniformity of compliance.  It need not be complex or difficult, but provide a tiered process for companies to follow.Secondly, there is simply no way to claim certification without a standard of compliance and an audit of the compliance by the company.  Returning to the format offered at the start of this article, the plan and implementation is how companies "Play Fair" when it comes to a Green business transition.  The audit and certification is how the public knows that the company isn't cutting into line under false pretenses. The public should take note of every Green logo that they encounter and do a quick Internet search to see which companies are trying to cheat the system.  If the logo is merely a purchase made online and the numerous forms are smart window-dressing that are never audited, then stop doing business with that company.  Their lack of ethics and integrity will show up in other ways as well.If the company has the audacity to make their own Green logo and claim to be Green, the buyer should beware that under such self-promotions a company has no standard of compliance.  Any company could literally go out and buy recycled paper and therefore claim that they have "Gone Green." In a day of marketing ingenuity and hype, we may want to remember the truism: "What is not measured cannot be proved, and what cannot be proved should not be believed."  The marketing efforts of any company should not be built on pretense, but with honesty.  In an age that calls for transparency, deception is not a good marketing strategy.

Green Business Is Spiritual Business

The green trend in business has everything to do with spirituality. This may not seem so obvious at first, but ultimately I believe this to be precisely the case. This article is about making the connections more clear between spirituality and the green movement. The green movement is largely defined by sustainability, and sustainability in terms of business covers what has been termed the "triple bottom line," that of economics, social sociability and environment. In the search for better understanding of the benefits of this approach it is useful to examine the roots of this movement.Certainly the economic portion is rooted in our survival. We've translated necessary commodities such as food and tools into the symbol of money in our societies. This category is perhaps the most tangible. The second category, sociability, relates to our mutual benefiting from our choices. For example, if I have two choices, the first benefits myself and perhaps a few others and generally hurts others either directly or indirectly. The second choice being one that includes all in terms of its benefits. The idea being that in the scope of "green" or sustainability, a person no longer makes the first choice by principal. In fact if the real spiritual component is there, they don't even desire to do something that would only benefit them selves and hurt others. The third category, that of environment is perhaps the greatest stretch for humanity to include in its bottom line; however, environment is really the most important because it includes all three. Our very survival in both the long and short term and our quality of life depend directly and indirectly on how well we treat the environment. In a very real way, what we do to the environment, we do to ourselves. So how does spirituality factor into this equation? The degree to which we realize the relevance of these factors has everything to do with our spiritual awareness. Consider this, it does not take any mental leap of faith to comprehend the three components of sustainability, yet it does take meaning to an individual. In short, these ideas have to matter; a person has to care. They need to see and "feel" themselves as part of the environment. They need to see themselves as inherently dependent and depended on in terms of helping the human race.So how does one make more real for themselves this spiritual awareness? There is not just one way, but here are some suggestions that may prove useful.1. Visit nature regularly. Observing nature helps us better understand natural processes, but also makes an emotional connection that binds us to our environment, which in turn helps us foster appreciation and respect for it.2. Meditate. Meditation has been proven to relieve stress, transmute internal blockages, increase awareness, enhance focus, and help one remain calm and centered in daily life and stressful situations. This is the body's restful awareness response, which helps foster connection to humanity and nature.3. Eat healthy. The healthier we eat, the better we feel, the more energy we have. The point is, the better we feel inside, the better we want to treat the environment and each other. And so it all comes full circle. It is in our best interest, to have everyone's best interest in mind, and in everyone's best interest to keep the environment healthy.

Green Ethics For Green Businesses

Ethics, by its very nature, implies that the representation is both honest in promotion and has the integrity of faithful practice by its advocates. It is a kind of "walk the walk and talk the talk" integration through the actions and decisions of those who lay claim to the cause. Yet, the environmental movement has those who see Going Green merely as a public relations or marketing issue. Knowing that the federal, state, and municipal lawmakers are pressing hard to encourage Green transition in the business community; many businesses sense the wave of interest in environmental issues as something to exploit. In response, there is hardly a business that isn't trying to sidle up to some Green ideas whether they are valid or mere tokenism.Environmentalism is ill served by token efforts of installing CFL bulbs, donating money to an environmental charity, or buying carbon credits. Regardless of of your attitude toward these highly-touted ideas, the fact is that it is the operational processes of your business or company that show that Green is part of your agenda. Right now, there are any number of companies writing checks to save the polar bears or attending a Green seminar that have anything but a Green operation in place. There is certainly a need for a Green Business certification like the one offered by the Green Business League that focuses predominantly on changing the way the people in the each business operate in our society.Let's get right at the obvious issues of a functional Green business that spends its financial resources governed by the lowest price or a favored relationship. This is true for the hiring of the janitorial service that hauls in dangerous cleaning chemicals using a uncertified staff to clean the building, or asking your various vendor if they are also Green business certified. The hypocrisy of promoting your business as a Green business is revealed when the questions are asked whether your business is installing Green practices and using Green vendors. Ethically, the need for practices that match the boast and the integrity that expects the same of those you purchase from is obvious though rarely applied. The new discussions of Green Supply Chain, carries the message already promoted by the Green Business League which is "Buy Green, Hire Green." We are hearing about concerns for Greenwashing where the Green hype is pure marketing regardless of evidences of misrepresentation and poor business integrity. To be a Green business, there are hundreds of simple and inexpensive ideas that should be gradually introduced into each and every business wishing to be an environmentally-committed business. Don't make the mistake of thinking that you must Go Green in one massive effort. Smart businesses hire a Green Consultant or follow a Green Management program to bring their business in the Green era with the credential that has the evidences to support the claims made by the marketing department. Go Green, but don't Play at Green.

Why Green Business Is Good Business

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, energy usage accounts for 30% of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. Corporations are adopting green business practices to realize the associated financial benefits accompanied with reducing overhead costs and fostering increased innovation. Eco-friendliness can benefit both the business and the environment. The risk and associated remedial costs in the unfortunate occurrences of accidents that can cause damage to the environment are greatly reduced with preventative measures that are implemented with green business practices. There are several reasons why green business is good businessSavings in energy costs are easily realised: Recycling, energy conservation, energy-efficient office equipment,water-saving devices all contribute to lower energy bills. Improved productivity: Greener workplaces are more likely to be healthier and safer, which translates to less sick time that can cost money. Eco-friendly changes can be relatively inexpensive and cost -effective: Smaller and more intimate businesses can consider printing on both sides of the paper to reduce paper supply costs or implement electronic document procedures.Eco -friendly businesses may develop an edge in attracting potential employees: People are still the most valuable asset of any business, and being green involves people as well as the environment.Telecommuting can costs and make happier staff: Employees working from home can reduce associated costs such as parking while making it easier to manage family issues. Not only can it make sense from an operational and economic standpoint for businesses to adopt an eco-friendly position, but many corporations are seeing the benefits from customers who are basing relationships on how committed the company is to protecting or minimizing their impact on the planet.Businesses can benefit from cost savings from reducing energy consumption, market share can be increased from the development of more competitive products and the risks of higher energy costs can be mitigated. The going green initiative does appear to be real and not alarmist, as concerns can be substantiated. But as with any emerging trends, some skepticism may be warranted as there will be undoubtedly be insincere entities that will attempt exploit the situation simply for monetary gains. But most are altruistic. As energy costs continue to rise, it may make sense to find alternative sources, and reduce costs. It can become imperative that businesses adopt some eco-friendly policy as it may be necessary for the survival of your business. It appears inevitable that regulations on emission standards are being implemented. Green business can find it advantageous to be involved with the setting of the standards. Eligible businesses can also receive credit for any voluntary action they may have implemented. An interesting development for green business is the system called "Cap and Trade" in which the businesses that beat the emmission targets, can sell pollution credits to those who don't. Going green is a way not not only save, but for green business to make more money.

Green Business Strategy - Getting Employees Engaged in Sustainability

Give the company a green boostTrying to persuade your business colleagues to go green can be tough. Yet we know environmental consciousness is not only good--it is good for business. Customer loyalty, public credibility and investor confidence are gained by companies that do things right. The majority of leading companies have made public commitments around sustainability - whether it is lowering their carbon footprint, investments in communities or ensuring sustainable sourcing. Yet, we see that their internal practices do not necessarily measure up to their public commitments - which leads to skepticism amongst their customers and employees about how truly green they are. This can impact the bottom line from reputation and loyalty to attracting and retaining the right talent. In order to be taken seriously and perceived as an environmentally-friendly enterprise, you should establish credibility and follow through on public commitments for sustainability. The added benefit for you is that sustainability in business means operating more efficiently...in other words, driving expense out of the business. There is a way you can significantly improve the effectiveness of sustainability initiatives and ensure that the environmental culture permeates throughout the organization: by framing them properly and getting employees engaged. Though simple in concept, it requires expertise in practice to get the best results from sustainable business initiatives. How to sell sustainability within your organizationThe single most important factor for success is executive sponsorship. It is required to ensure the success of sustainable practices within your company. However, changing your organizational culture and perception of the company's values also requires contribution from everyone within the organization. In order to do so effectively, it is important to understand the unique perspectives of senior managers and benefits to each area in addressing sustainability. In turn, senior managers will be able to frame the objectives within their functional areas in a way that is relevant to each employee, creating a more comprehensive and effective implementation. Some of the key functional areas to get on board include: Finance, Marketing, HR and IT / Operations.Defining the need for the finance department:In order to influence the finance department to direct resources toward sustainability efforts, it is important to focus on what is most relevant to them. Expense savings are a huge focus in business right now and finance departments are constantly looking to the business to do more for less. Often times it leads to internal cost cuts which translates to reduction in headcount - something which may impact the effectiveness of the business (less headcount to do the work and morale impact on productivity) and public perception on the viability of the business. However, supporting green initiatives is a great opportunity for those in the finance department to get employees excited about and supportive of internal cost cuts. By identifying ways for employees to help reduce energy consumption - such as turning off the lights, changing screen savers and shutting down computers at night, stocking the refrigerator, cutting down on paper waste, etc., you can save money and increase morale as employees unite in doing something good.Defining the need for HR:HR departments are typically concerned with attracting and retaining top talent. However, when the business is focused on saving money and potentially reducing headcount, it can be challenging to maintain employee satisfaction. Additionally, they need to stretch their budgets farther, making recruiting and retention ever more difficult.A focus on sustainability can be the basis of attracting talent and may help smaller companies, which are often at a disadvantage when recruiting employees, attract creative and talented staff.- Highly educated/talented prospective employees, especially Generation Y, are seeking the opportunity to work in a company focused on sustainability.- Employees look to work for companies with a strong brand reputation - and a focus on sustainability could be a key point of differentiation in creating a positive brand image. From a retention perspective, current employees will be more engaged and productive. Employee productivity and morale typically impacted in the current cost-cutting environment. However, by focusing on cost-cutting through sustainable business practices, a culture focused on "doing-good" - employees will be more engaged and able to focus on productivity instead of the stress typically associated with cost-cuts.Defining the need for IT / Operations departments:IT and operations groups tend to be the most resource / energy intensive groups within an organization and they are constantly being asked to do more with less - causing frustration amongst the groups who use the IT resources. While it is challenging to get employees on board with IT cuts, IT groups can be influenced to get on board with sustainability with knowledge that by getting employees engaged in green IT initiatives, IT departments will be able to more effectively drive their cost-cutting initiatives and maximize results without sacrificing efficiency. Additionally, IT will have the support necessary to implement policies and practices that--while reducing energy and resource consumption--may generate resistance among employees.Defining the need for the marketing department:Sustainability initiatives can address two key focal areas of the marketing department - getting and retaining customers and brand advocacy. Research indicates that companies whose employee practices do not align with green marketing claims will drive consumer skepticism and be perceived as cynically taking advantage of environmental concerns. Marketing leaders have the opportunity to engage customers and employees on a new dimension by demonstrating commitment to sustainability - thereby making employees into committed brand advocates and creating loyal customers by living up to public commitments.Aligning the rest of the organizationOnce Executive Sponsorship is in place and Senior Management understands the benefits of embracing sustainability within their functional areas, it is time to align the rest of the organization and embed a true culture of sustainability. Since employees, like consumers, have different attitudes and perceptions around sustainability programs and can be segmented as such, it is important to design programs that address the unique segments within your organization. The steps below outline what is necessary to fully engage your employee base to achieve your ongoing sustainability commitments.1. Survey employees to segment on attitudes, perceptions, behaviors2. Conduct moderated discussions to get a deeper understanding and to develop communication, persuasion, and engagement strategies3. Design promotions and track behavior to add a dimension of competition and tangibility-and go beyond traditional directive style4. Create a holistic program to achieve stated green business goals while identifying incremental performance opportunities using employee inputBenefitsThe benefits of embedding a sustainability culture within your organization are clear: greater efficiency, lower costs, positive PR, easier recruiting and retention and of course, the positive impact on the environment. By understanding the unique perspectives and needs of everyone within the organization and ensuring the organization is fully aligned, it is easier to communicate your overall strategy and identify and transfer knowledge of successes across the organization. This enables a more comprehensive implementation of your sustainability programs, thereby multiplying the effects of any programs designed.EvaluationImplementing sustainable business practices is a process--not an event--and ultimately should become part of the way the company does business. In order to ensure ongoing success, tools should be established to track and share progress. Start by investigating what can be measured, including electrical and other energy consumption, and resources consumed. Then establish a baseline from which goals can be set and progress tracked. Measure very frequently at first to create continuous feedback on relevant behavioral changes; as those changes become habituated, you can measure less frequently. Conduct root cause analysis on both positive and negative performance so you can replicate the positive and avoid the negative.Use employee engagement programs to achieve these goals and help celebrate success across the organization.

Green Business Certification

When your company is thinking about Going Green, it may be good to think forward about how a decision to seek a Green certification will affect your business. The kind of "Easy Green" now promoted to this Green-driven market brings short-term gain with long term worries. No decision to create an environmentally-friendly business format should compromise the integrity of the company's future. This is a decision worthy of better thought.Take, for example, the near certainty that some investigative reporter is sure to look into the growing number of website certifications that require only a few hundred dollars of payment and a self-assessment form. The lack of any integrity factors for these kinds of certifications seem to invite abuses. In other words, a less-than-honest firm can earn the same certification as a environmentally-committed company. This glaring invitation for abuse will certainly come back to haunt companies who took the easy route to a world stressing problem. Only a fool could think that these easy-to-cheat systems will become a bastion of integrity. It has been properly said:"If we cannot measure something, we cannot verify it." The obvious purpose of a Green certification logo is to provide the public with some assurance that the logo means something more than that the applicant paid a fee and filled in a form. These programs promote a fundamental deception because the certification has been designed to convey public confidence in something that has not been verified or even reviewed by an independent professional.Just ask yourself how you would feel after deciding to do business with another firm that boasts of its Green merit to win your business, and you subsequently discover that any firm with a few hundred dollars could buy the same designation. Would you feel deceived and cheated? This will be the ugly fate of more than a few companies that take the "Easy Green" route of short-circuiting the system rather than making a realistic commitment. The whole concept of greenwashing has been artificially kept alive because of a business belief that marketing is the bending of perceptions to boost marketshare and profits. Advertising has always provided the latitude to turn negatives into positives, words into realities, and minimums into maximums. So, what happens when the allowances of marketing run into the demands of integrity? In the case of environmentalism, the mongoloid child is called greenwashing. If the only way to verify Green compliance is by measuring or testing, then the obvious antidote to greenwashing is an audit by a professional who uses an industry standard of compliance, The Green Business League made a commitment years ago to train certifiers (auditors) and provide a standard for a Green business that requires more than good intentions or a token effort. More than 250 Certified Green Consultants provide guidance and audits for businesses willing to prove their Green value. This standard has been recently affirmed in an executive order by President Obama requiring a sustainability officer who is required to project a variety of Green and sustainable practices for their agency or company. This federal requirement shows that the path forward is not one of self-acclamation, but of proven compliance.Let us return to the original question. What would be the investigative reporters criticism to find that your company (out of many other Easy Green companies) installed a series of Green practices that had been audited by an independent professional and found to merit a national certification? You would probably feel pretty good about being the one that stood out as the authentically Green business.Audits prove that you keep honest books. Audits prevent cheating by manufacturers. Audits of inventory stop thievery. No one really wants an audit unless they know that the audit will prove the quality of the work done. Those who desire to cheat the system resist audits. One of the failures of Copenhagen was China's willingness to sign on to all the mandates of the Climate Control Summit as long as China did not have to submit to an audit of the results. What message does that revelation convey to you in clear message. China has no intention to live up to the mandates, although they will put on a show that they are concerned about the environment. This is a classic example of Green washing.Companies everywhere should make the commitment to reject Greenwashing by insisting on Green certification earned by Green practices certified by an independent audit. Accepting any Green claim at face value is as foolish as inviting the unscrupulous of the world to pay you in Monopoly money. Why not play golf with someone who feels that adjusting his score is a good way to impress his friends. If it is not measured, it cannot be verified; and if there is no audit of Green practices there can be no certification of a Green business... unless you bought it off the Internet!

Start a Business: Green Business Trends

Although "going green" seems to be the way of the future, the customer's transition to buying green products and services is not moving at record speed. In order to attract new buyers, the most successful green companies are focusing on other benefits that their products can provide to clients.Right now, shoppers are more likely to switch over to green products and services if they offer more benefits, like a cost savings or additional health benefits or greater convenience than the non-green alternatives. Entrepreneurs who want to get into the green industry and launch a company are smart to look at these trends and develop green products and services that offer multiple benefits in order to bring in new buyers. Here are three trends going on in the green industry right now:Saving Customers MoneyCustomers want a good deal. Environmentally conscious people may be interested in saving the environment, but when it comes down to buying, the price may end up being the deciding factor. In order to succeed, green businesses will need to stay competitive in the marketplace. Offering the same value at a higher price generally does not excite shoppers.Even if the initial cost of the green product is higher, it can still compete if it can prove the long-term cost savings versus the cost of the competitor. For instance, compact fluorescent light bulbs may have a higher price tag than standard bulbs, but over their lifetime, they end up costing the consumer less money.A fairly new field that helps consumers save money is green consulting. This is where an environmental consultant performs an energy audit for a homeowner or business to evaluate how the client can save money on his or her utility bills. The whole idea is that the long-term cost savings will far outweigh the upfront consulting investment or cost to switch to low-energy services.Provide Health BenefitsSome green products and services can offer health benefits in addition to being environmentally safe. This can be important to consumers, especially those with health problems associated with harmful chemicals or other environmental toxins.Demonstrate how your business can provide multiple solutions with one product, and shoppers will take notice. A solution to a health problem can be priceless for those who have to endure ailments on a daily basis. On top of that, more parents want non-toxic homes for their children and are looking for products and services do just that. For example, some cleaning franchises use only environmentally friendly cleaners. Generally, their philosophy means non-toxic, chemical-free, all-natural and biodegradable products. This feature can attract clients for health reasons, but also can draw corporations that are trying to demonstrate their green values.Convenience BenefitsWhen it is easier or more convenient to use an environmentally friendly product rather than it's non-green competitor, this alone can be the reason that shoppers will switch to green. For example, Clear Air Lawn Care advertises quiet equipment on their jobs. Another product that offers convenience is the canvas shopping bag. They are easier to carry, more reliable and can haul heavier loads.

Will Green Business Take Off in 2011?

2011 is now underway and both individuals and businesses are refining their plans for the year ahead. There has been a lot of speculation about what will happen in 2011 and a quick Google search shows there are many predictions on key trends in economics, technology and the environment.Although environmental issues have enjoyed a growing awareness over recent years it does not seem that 2011 will be the year when green business gains traction and becomes common business practice. While the general consensus is that green business practices will not take off, the growing momentum of green issues is predicted to continue and the end of 2011 will see a greater global understanding of sustainability. As a result customers will increasingly ask about the environmental impact of a business and its products.Another trend is that customers will be increasingly important in 2011 and businesses will need to develop strategies that talk with their customers rather than at them. How a business defines and seeks out their customers is also likely to change. The greater use of technology is creating opportunities for businesses to reach out to customers beyond their immediate geographical sphere. The rising use of mobile computing and social media (another trend expected to continue in 2011) means customers are now more connected than they have ever been - not only with the business but also with other customers. This year there is also a focus on energy management. With the expectation of oil price increases in 2011, more and more businesses are realising that there are benefits in reducing costs associated with energy consumption. As well as having a positive impact on the bottom line, a focus on energy management to reduce carbon emissions prepares a business for carbon limits likely to be imposed (at least in developed countries) in future. An additional prediction for 2011 is that the gap will widen between businesses who have already started to implement environmental practices and those that have not. This gap may not impact this year but make it more difficult for firms without environmental policies to catch up later. Each business should consider whether these trends will influence how they conduct themselves in 2011. Introducing an energy management program or other green business practices will likely put a business in a more competitive position by the end of the year. Aside from benefits in reduced costs and better market position for the years ahead, 2011 will offer opportunities to engage with customers who have a greater knowledge of sustainability.

Easy and Affordable Going Green Business Tips

Creating a "green" business or transforming an established business into an eco-friendly environment, may seem like a very overwhelming task. Yet, in today's era of escalating energy costs and climate change, energy efficiency is the most important aspect of greening your business. You can reap immediate savings by lowering your overall energy use and doing so will automatically reduce your business's carbon emission footprint. You can also save money in the areas of waste reduction, equipment use, transportation, and building design.Operating a green business is not only good for the environment, but good for your business's bottom line. Conserving resources and cutting down on waste saves money. The good news is that regardless of the type of business you run, there are simple things you can do, to run an environmentally friendly business.* Save Energy with Existing Equipment. Make it a company policy to turn off all lights, equipment and machinery when it is not being used, especially nights and weekends.- Much equipment is idle and unused for up to 90 percent of its life.- Turning off the computers at the end of the day can save an additional 50 percent.* Save energy by installing new or replacing existing equipment.- Install low-cost energy monitors that can provide an accurate display of the cost and energy use of individual equipment. Research shows that this step alone can lead to energy savings of up to 40 percent.- Lighting can often account for up to 40 percent of energy costs for many businesses. Installing motion-sensor or automatic dimmers helps to ensure, that you are efficiently shutting down lights in areas when no one is present.- A very cost-effective upgrade is to replace all of your incandescent lighting with new compact fluorescent bulbs. Your older 1.5 inch diameter fluorescent tube lighting should also be replaced with newer 1 inch tubes and solid-state electronic ballasts.- Install displacement toilet dams in toilet reservoirs. Placing one or two plastic containers filled with stones [not bricks] in the toilet's reservoir will displace about 4 liters of water per flush - a huge reduction of water use over the course of a year.* Reduce unnecessary waste. Any waste that your company generates is an unnecessary cost. Waste is simply inefficient. Implement a recycling program and have a meeting on how to eliminate the items that are not recyclable. Setting up recycling in your workplace is something that is simple and invites your employees to become a part of the movement, giving them a sense of purpose.- Encourage communications by email and read email messages on screen to determine whether it's necessary to print them. If it's not, then don't. If you need to keep a copy for legal reasons, or for various other reasons, there are online storage sites that may be utilized for this reason.- Purchase recyclable products for your office, there are now many different vendors that supply not only recycled paper, but sell "green" cleaners, standard or not so standard, office supplies. These vendors will typically provide a recycling program of their own. A word of advice, if you are needing new office furniture, before investing money in purchasing it new, find out if your existing furniture can be refurbished.Going green not only helps a business to do their part in minimizing their eco-foot print. The savings, especially at times like these, help everyone. If that's not enough, there has never been a better time than now to tap into a laundry list of tax credits, rebates and other financial incentives designed to encourage individuals and businesses to go the greener mile. At the federal level in the U.S., individuals can reap the rewards of no less than eight different financial incentives. Besides these federal incentives, nearly every U.S. state has additional state or local incentives available.

Incremental Green Business Programming Works Best

In life, we have all found that we can either do the job ourselves or pay someone to do it for us. The major reason that we hire someone to do the job is that this person does the job better or does the work faster than we can. It makes sense to hire someone to handle the task if it is a big distraction to your work or outside your competencies. However, there are times when it makes sense to do the job yourself.Installing a Green program for your company is an example of this two-fold choice. There is a growing army of firms and consultants that will arrive at your door and take over the Green agenda. Today, energy auditing firms are popular. Other consultants are building specialist. Then, there are solar and wind power experts and remodeling firms looking to insulate the building or install more efficient windows. We must not forget the carbon accounting programs that are related to the energy sector as well.It may help to remember that Going Green is not the "Just One Thing" spoken of by Jack Palance in the City Slicker movie. Each of the items mentioned are one piece of a much larger process. We have a lot of misdirected Green in the business world. By grabbing onto one environmental element, businesses eagerly proclaim that they have "Gone Green." This is a step in the right direction, but it is not a Green business certification by itself.Like going out to eat, it is convenient and pleasant to have someone else prepare your dinner; most of us believe that "home cooking" is best.. and probably healthier. There is a growing realization that it is possible to create a holistic Green and sustainable program for your business with a modest amount of guidance and training.Referring to Executive Order #13514 which was signed in the fall of 2009 by President Obama, we see that there is a ca for sustainable operations to include carbon reduction, energy reduction, paperless systems, reduced waste, water demand reductions, and Green fleet ideas. So, it is easily seen that the sustainability plan should include a broad array of applications. Also found in this executive order to the call for each organization to install a sustainability officer as the key man or liaison for the Green program in the company. This is the core issue for many small, medium, or large size companies. While this appointed person should be trained as a Certified Sustainability Officer, the minimal cost of training is small change compared to the fees of an environmental consulting firm. The sustainability office has one primary task, and that is to prepare a tailored sustainability plan for the company. And, this plan is frankly a step-by-step process of environmental improvements that can be phased in at a comfortable pace. With training and guidance, the sustainability officer can maintain an ongoing program that does not disrupt the business and also rewards it with savings from these Green improvements.Companies now have even more help in the implementation of a Green program. The Green Path software recently introduced provides an extensive checklist of Green business ideas. By working through the software, any company can improve its operation and earn points toward a credible and transparent Green business certification. The combination of this software and a trained sustainability officer seems to be both logical and appropriate.Remember, the building is not the same as a business. Some believe that Going Green is about making capital improvements to the building. In fact, the vast majority of businesses do not own their own building; but they can certainly Green Up their routine operations. It is obvious that a Green business is more about operation than building improvements. Therefore, as seen in the executive order, companies have been encourage to Green Up their operations. The message is clear, Green buildings are great, but Green practices are how any company can get on Green Path.

Green Business Intelligence - What, How and Why?

Environmentally friendly business intelligence - or Green BI - is kind of an ambiguous term. What does it mean? There are 2 main ways of approaching the topic of green BI - the physical environmental impact of implementing a BI solution - and using BI to analyze your footprint.Business leaders acknowledge that proactively addressing corporate social responsibility (CSR) issues can result in real business benefits. An IBM global survey of more than 250 executives showed that 68% are already focusing on CSR activities to create new revenue streams, and 54% believe CSR gives them a competitive advantage.Physical impact of implementing BIIt is commonly thought that an environmentally-friendly IT department can save you money, at least in the long run. Cloud computing infrastructure is noted for being more environmentally friendly than in-house infrastructure, with no need for new systems or IT equipment inside your company's walls. So exactly how can the cloud make your organization more green?1. Energy consumption: since cloud-based business intelligence solutions are delivered through a scalable environment, energy consumption is reduced at the source. At the same time, your company's energy expenses will be reduced.2. Decommissioning: eventually, every on-premise server you buy will have to be replaced, creating a future waste disposal challenge. By using the SaaS model, you won't have to buy (and later get rid of) any IT equipment. So that means you will also enjoy waste disposal cost savings.3. Staff: keeping your IT needs means you won't have to hire resources as aggressively. Not having to increase the number of employees also translates to a lower rate of energy consumption, not to mention lots of other cost savings.President Barack Obama expressed a desire for the Federal Government to spend over 150 billion U.S dollars on green technology at the beginning of his term, and he wanted a significant amount of this money to be spent on green IT and green computing. The idea was to practice green IT initiatives, especially those concerned with improving the environmental sustainability of enterprise data centers.Using BI to analyze your footprintRegulatory mandates to reduce greenhouse gas emissions worldwide are compelling companies to look for new approaches to carbon management-from sourcing and production, to distribution and product afterlife. Much of the opportunity to address CO2 emissions rests on the supply chain. Reducing the supply chain's carbon footprint is essential. So how would you use BI to analyze your footprint? Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impact across your business activities by monitoring your carbon use. Streamline business processes to improve overall efficiency, enhance quality, and add or change activities that help you become more environmentally friendly. Use dashboards to estimate emissions across business travel, distribution, energy, manufacturing etc. Collate data from company-wide systems into one place so you can comprehensively report your CO2 emissions to key stakeholders in an auditable and consistent manner.Unfortunately, a lot of companies still have little or no actionable data about their environmental footprint. Although organizations may have the means to track cashflow, they often have little business intelligence or transparency into the most critical sustainability issues. The C-Suite is increasingly calling for environmental performance indicators to be included on existing executive dashboards - it is not enough anymore to be the fastest and cheapest: companies must strive to be the greenest and cleanest as well. What are the benefits of using BI to measure your "greenness"? Helping reduce your ecological footprint and energy costs, improving employee morale, developing competitive advantage and leadership, enjoying lower cost of compliance and strengthening your brand image are a few of them. What do others have to say about Green BI?William Laurent, a leading expert in information strategy and governance has talked about the Seven Pillars of Green BI:"Green business intelligence breaks down into seven related, yet importantly distinct components. The Seven Pillars of Green BI provides the actionable "green knowledge" that will best assist global enterprises in monitoring, managing, and implementing their environmentally-wise future."The Seven Pillars of Green BIManufacturing Consumption Footprint (i.e. Resources Used in Production)
Manufacturing Output Footprint (i.e. Waste Created from Production)
Operational Consumption Footprint
Operational Output Footprint
Product Consumption Lifecycle (i.e. Customer Consumption)
Employee Social Footprint
Green BPR (i.e. Green Reengineering of Business Processes, Procurement Patterns, etc.)To sum upWhat is the future of Green BI? It could be the introduction of new types of key performance indicators (KPIs) and dashboards that will measure environmental performance and compliance. These dashboards will be able to regulate, track and ration energy, while monitoring and integrating power usage statistics with pricing strategies and carbon-footprint data.In the future, a large amount of green intelligence budgets will be at stake when it comes to measuring carbon footprints and emissions. Tax breaks and compliance penalties associated with environmental sustainability will make their way to the forefront of company concerns. What do you think? Tell us in the comments.
